On Saturday Chinese men from all around would meet in Chinatown with their precious birds, worth thousands of dollars, to make them sing together. Some of the men came from Connecticut and I was fascinated to see them enjoying their singing birds. It took a long time for them to accept me returning every Saturday as the women were sitting far away on benches having a good time. One day when I did not come they said, “Why did you not come!” They finally accepted me and I was very happy.
