To Whom It May Concern,

I have followed Ms. Barrat’s career for a long time, and have been impressed not only with her photographic gifts, but with her sympathetic and knowledgeable approach to social problems. She has also demonstrated rare courage in working with troubled communities and with groups usually hostile to outsiders. She has my unqualified recommendation that you respond favorably to her application.

Respectfully,

To Whom It May Concern,

This will introduce Madame Martine Barrat, a French writer and filmmaker who recently made an extraordinary contribution to our three-hour NBC News documentary called VIOLENCE IN AMERICA. Mme. Barrat specializes in studying youth gangs in New York, and her unique taped interviews with gang members were used extensively on the program. But beyond that, she has projects for more ambitious films on this subject, plus a book consisting of self-portraits of various gang members.

In my opinion, Mme. Barrat’s insight and intelligence in this and other areas can make an important cultural contribution to our society, helping us to understand some of the most perplexing social phenomena of the American city. I strongly recommend that her work - both film and literary - be supported in every way.

Sincerely,

Stuart Schulberg
